THE PRACTICE

A closer look.

Explore belly dance with Mélina at Akasa: a welcoming way to discover rhythm, movement and personal expression in our Dubai Media City studio. This class guide introduces the foundations of the practice, from individual movements to short combinations set to music. You do not need a performance background, a particular body shape or a costume to enquire. Start with curiosity, comfortable clothing and a willingness to learn at your own pace.

What to expect

01

Ease into movement with a gentle warm-up, posture awareness and simple weight shifts.

02

Explore foundational movements such as hip accents, circles, figure eights and shoulder patterns, learning each element before combining it with steps.

03

Bring the movements together in a short, repeatable phrase, then slow down for a comfortable finish. The exact sequence depends on the session and teacher.

Is this your kind of class?

For adults who are curious about dance, enjoy moving to music or want a different kind of studio class. First-timers can begin with individual movements; returning dancers can ask about sessions that build on their experience. Tell the team your starting point so they can confirm a suitable group.

What you will explore

Belly dance gives individual movements time and attention. You can practise moving the hips, ribcage, shoulders and arms separately, then connect those patterns with steps. Musicality means listening for a beat, a pause or a change in the music and choosing how to respond. Repetition helps a movement become more familiar without expecting everyone to look the same.

Technique, enjoyment and your own pace

The emphasis is on learning and enjoying movement. Small ranges and slower repetitions are useful starting points; more elaborate combinations can come later. You can pause, ask for a movement to be broken down or return to a simpler version. Class is a place to practise, without pressure to perform for an audience.

A dance form with cultural roots

Belly dance is a broad term used for several related dance traditions and contemporary styles associated with the Middle East and North Africa. Music, technique and teaching approaches vary. Ask which style a particular Akasa session explores; the class listing and teacher will provide that context.

Joining the next session

Mélina is Akasa’s belly dance instructor. Contact the team to ask about session dates, length, level and price. Confirmed sessions will appear on the live timetable when available. An enquiry helps the team understand your interest and preferred days; it does not reserve a place or take payment.

Before you arrive

Wear flexible clothing that lets you step and turn comfortably. A hip scarf is optional; specialist dancewear is not needed to make an enquiry. Ask the studio about footwear for your session. Water and yoga mats are available at Akasa, so you do not need to bring either. Members and anyone attending classes have free parking, any day and any time of the week.
